Measure our communities against the rest of the country, and you find the rate of volunteering is higher than most. Nebraska ranks Number 2 among the states in the percentage of residents who donate their time to a worthy cause; Iowa comes in at Number 5. Omaha ranks 20th among mid-size American cities.*
There’s a great way to celebrate our neighbors’ community spirit. Nominations are now open for the 55th Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, hosted by United Way of the Midlands. All entries must be submitted by midnight on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. More information can be found at www.uwmidlands.org/volunteer. CATEGORIESIndividuals, families, groups or corporations that were actively engaged in providing volunteer service during 2009 in Sarpy, Douglas, Pottawattamie and Mills counties are eligible for nomination. The nominees must have provided direct service or been responsible for planning, organizing or supervising other volunteers. The categories are:
The Business category includes government, environment, public safety and corrections. The Special Needs category includes volunteers who worked with those who are physically, emotionally, and mentally challenged, or homeless. Special categories include "Volunteer of the Year" and "Volunteen of the Year"; these awards recognize exemplary individuals who have provided outstanding volunteer service during the past year. The "Spirit of Volunteerism" award is presented to a corporation or company that has shown exemplary support for volunteerism through its community-service participation. The prestigious "Leota G. Norton Award" recognizes a volunteer whose service involved planning or organizing a significant special project during the 2009 calendar year. Finally, the "Making It Happen" award is presented to a group or organization that impacted the entire community through its organization and mobilization of volunteer resources. All nominations must be submitted on an official form. You can use the online nomination process.
