At the heart of every effective health and human-service effort, we find a leadership group that gives an organization the strength, character and purpose which distinguishes it from all others. United Way of the Midlands draws strength from over 3,000 leadership givers and endowment contributors. In order to recognize their extraordinary concern for, and impact on the community, the following United Way of the Midlands Leadership Giving Societies were established: ![]() Established in 1988 to recognize outstanding philanthropy, the society is named after the Frenchman, Alexis de Tocqueville, who wrote extensively about the unique character of American society -- liberty, equality, and the spirit of "neighbor helping neighbor." The Alexis de Tocqueville Society recognizes annual gifts of $10,000 or more, and currently has 191 members.

Established in 1989, the Bridgebuilders Society recognizes individuals and families making annual gifts of $1,000 to $9,999. Such gifts represent a new level of community participation and involvement which helps bridge the gap between the increasing needs in our community and the services available to meet them. There are more than 2,700 local Bridgebuilders who know just how to LIVE UNITED.
