Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a great time for Americans to give back to their communities. In the spirit of the civil rights leader, six young members of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area will share their hopes and dreams for our world on January 17, 2011.

Winners of United Way’s MLK, Jr. Day Essay Contest will read their compositions to family and friends at 10:00 a.m. at 1805 Harney Street.

PLEASE NOTE:  All winners will be notified in advance of the 1-17-11 event. Seating is very limited.

A team of community volunteers on United Way’s Youth Volunteer Services committee is selecting first and second place essays in each of three categories: elementary school, middle school and high school. First place authors will win a $50 award, and those in second place will receive $25. All students who submit essays will receive a certificate of participation. The annual contest is open to public, private and home-schooled students in Douglas and Sarpy County in Nebraska, and Pottawattamie and Mills County in Iowa.

The winning essays will be posted on United Way’s website (uwmidlands.org) VERY SOON!  (1-18-11)
