Your Dollars at Work - Program Funding Announced for 2009-10

June 2009 -- Community Care Funding for 2009-2010 Approved for More than 150 Partner Programs in Omaha-Council Bluffs-Bellevue Metro Area

The United Way of the Midlands (UWM) Board of Directors has approved $11,358,731 in funding requests that will support 155 health and human service programs in the Omaha metropolitan area in the coming year. At a time when government and foundation support of many nonprofits is falling, funding from UWM donors is rising an average 1.97%. The money comes from unrestricted contributions to the 2008 United Way of the Midlands campaign.

Of the 155 programs approved for Community Care funding by United Way volunteers, 73 programs will receive funding increases, 76 programs will see their funding remain the same, and six programs will see reductions in United Way funding. Of the six reductions, five programs either were discontinued at the agency’s request or through collaboration with UWM. The programs are operated at United Way of the Midlands’ partner agencies. (An additional program, part of a UWM community initiative project, received a funding increase in this distribution.)

Here is a breakdown of funding, by UWM focus area, from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010:

• Education $3,603,583 (32%)

• Income $3,638,012 (32%)

• Health $4,117,136 (36%)

The allocations process is extensive. "United Way donors might not be aware of how much research and measurement goes into investing their donations back into our community," said John Ewing, volunteer chair of United Way’s Planning, Allocation and Community Development Cabinet. Ewing is Douglas County Treasurer. "It’s a thorough process that ensures health and human services are available in neighborhoods across the metro area, for people with different kinds of needs. Now more than ever, donors can feel proud about helping our community stay strong."

Members of United Way’s professional staff make site visits to all Community Care Fund programs and provide budget training for partner agencies. In their application for funds, the agencies are asked to demonstrate how their programs show measurable progress in an individual’s life or change at the community level.

In addition, staff and the 19 community volunteers on the allocations cabinet consider the number of people served by each program, agency/program efficiency and accountability. The team works to identify possible duplication of services, gaps in local service and opportunities for collaboration among partners. Those partners may include unaffiliated nonprofits, civic groups, colleges/universities, private industry and government agencies.

The organizations included in the Community Care Fund network also received a combined $1,373,948 in donor gifts designated through the United Way drive to individual partner agencies.

The cycle will begin anew on September 3, 2009. The United Way Campaign and Day of Caring will kick off with a public event at the Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge at 7:30 a.m.

United Way of the Midlands celebrates 86 years of service in 2009 by mobilizing the caring power of people who live and work in Douglas, Sarpy and Pottawattamie Counties.
