Students from six school districts are sharing their own dreams for the future on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - by submitting essays in a contest that honors the civil rights leader's memory.
 
Free Tax Sites for 2009
The elderly and disadvantaged can find free tax preparation and free e-file at a number of sites around the metro Omaha area, sponsored by the Omaha EITC Coalition. Many of the sites will also offer services that will help people become more financially stable in the future. AND there's a new do-it-yourself computer filing lab available in North Omaha through April 15.
 
2009 Walk for Warmth Registration is Open

Approximately 1,000 people came together recently to raise funds for our neighbors in need of utility assistance.  Read more on the background of  the February 20th Heartland Walk for Warmth.

 
Donations Program for DTV Conversion
For many senior citizens, television is one of their lifelines to the world. On February 17th, that portal for news and entertainment will be cut off if they haven’t connected a converter box to older televisions; the converter allows analog tv’s to accept the all-digital signal mandated to begin that day. But there's a way other citizens can help - donate a new converter box to the Nebraska Digital Television Conversion Coalition.

Bringing People and Jobs Together in Omaha

United Way is part of an exciting new workforce development project, along with the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, Metro Community College, and the Workforce Investment Board with support from the City of Omaha. The goal: bring underskilled workers together with local companies that have good jobs open.

Call 211 for Resources on Economy, Family Troubles
The midlands may be insulated a bit from the current economic downturn, but United Way and its partners are serving many who feel the effects of the crisis in the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Bellevue metro area. A call to 2-1-1 can point you in the direction of local helping programs, including those focused on troubled families, too.
