Jim and Shirley Young always remember where they got their start. The chairman, president and CEO of Union Pacific Railroad and his wife still call Omaha home, and they share a considerable amount of their personal time and financial support to improve the quality of life of the metro area. For their community support and spirit, the Youngs were selected 2011’s United Way of the Midlands “Humanitarians of the Year,” bestowed by the organization’s Tocqueville Society. The Youngs’ service includes chairing the 2007 United Way fundraising drive, and Jim’s chairmanship of the United Way Board of Directors in 2009. As well, they have led efforts for TeamMates and their alma mater, Omaha South High School. Jim Young’s leadership and volunteer achievements include service to University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Creighton University, The Salvation Army and Joslyn Art Museum. Shirley Young is a trained hospice volunteer, and has lent her time and support to the Ralston Public Schools, the Baright Library Foundation and Lauritzen Gardens. “This couple has been deeply involved in efforts that strengthen many aspects of our community,” said Karen Bricklemyer, President and CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “They are unmatched in their dedication to this place we call ‘home.’ ” |
