Scouting provides unique opportunities to boys and girls by offering a chance to develop character and life skills; all while having fun with fellow Scouts and adult leaders.  It's a great opportunity for youth around the community and United Way helps make this service possible to all kids, no matter their financial constraints.

In a study conducted by the Search Institute, Cub Scouting helped young boys build assets in 35 of the 40 major developmental assets for elementary age youth1.  These assets include family support, positive family communication, community values, safety, creativity, reading and dozens of other essential areas of development.

The benefits of Scouting for girls and boys are far-reaching impacting family life, school, personal relationships, character building and leadership.  The unique Scouting environment teaches boys and girls the importance of working together towards common goals while building upon important standards for living.  By teaching the importance of giving back to and respecting your community, Scouting provides a starting point for positive behavior later in life.

When asked what was important to young Girl Scouts, the need for a safe place and empowerment by other girls and adult leaders ranked highest2

Girl Scouts provides both of these essentials and so much more.  They operate with the goal of helping girls “Become, Belong, Believe & Build.”  Their adult leaders provide the guidance necessary as young girls grow into young women.  Their programs provide exposure to art programs, environmental education and immersion, leadership building, and self empowerment workshops.  Showing girls what's available to them is the surest path to a successful future.

How do Girl Scouts provide opportunities to girls statewide?

Through their Outreach program, Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska provided Scouting to over 2,000 girls who would be unable to afford Scouting on their own.

By giving all girls equal opportunities, Girl Scouts ensures that generations of young women are able to enhance their lives through life skills, philanthropy and education.  Here's an example of the girls who are able to participate in Scouting with the help of United Way donor dollars:

How many boys are able to participate in Scouting with the help of Outreach programs?

Over 2,000 young boys were given the chance to participate in Scouting with the help of their Outreach program.

United Way donor dollars helped these boys participate in character building, environmental education, and leadership opportunities.  See how three troop leaders give their time to make sure these boys get all they can out of Scouting:

Last year, United Way allocated $437,147 to Scouting programs across Nebraska and Iowa.

United Way recognizes the importance of providing opportunities to the youth in our community, and Scouting is just one of the many opportunities available.  Every day, boys and girls are impacted by the values inherent in Scouting, benefiting from educational programs and leadership activities that will stick with them well into adulthood.  Everyone deserves the same opportunities and United Way donors make sure that happens.
