2-1-1 is a free, confidential call, any time of day or night, from all 93 Nebraska counties and eight in southwest Iowa. We’re ready to help people connect with community services near where they live and work, services such as shelter from abuse or homelessness, addiction treatment, family counseling, medical support, transportation challenges and much more. Over the past five years 2006 through 2010 our call volume increased 26% from 51,803 calls in 2006 to 65, 347 calls in 2010. November 2010 with 6,988 was the highest call volume per month in our 2-1-1 history, beating previous record months by several hundred calls. Here’s how 2-1-1 works: Calls are answered by a trained and certified "information and referral" specialist who:
During busy periods, the call center’s system offers people several options; leave a message that will be returned as soon as possible, or instruct the phone system to automatically dial their phone number back when the specialist becomes free. The 2-1-1 database is also available on-line at ne211.org and at uwmidlands.org/211. 2-1-1 is hosted by United Way of the Midlands in Omaha. Available to all Nebraskans and the people in these SW Iowa counties: Pottawattamie, Harrison, Mills, Shelby, Cass, Montgomery, Fremont and Page. Nebraska’s 2-1-1 network was built by many nonprofit and public organizations including Nebraska United Ways, the UNL Public Policy Center, Nebraska Dept. of Health and Human Services; the Nebraska Legislature and the Nebraska Public Service Commission.
