Visiting Nurse Association, Omaha and Council Bluffs -- A man and his wife were homeless, but he had an even bigger problem: his incision from a hernia operation had never healed. They were living in a tent encampment in the Omaha-Council Bluffs area, and his wound was still open. The danger to his life was apparent to the people who visited the encampment. Thanks to United Way donors, a nurse and social worker helped him stay as healthy as possible until he and his wife could get into a shelter. And when he grew even stronger, he received special care in a hospital. The nurse and social worker monitored his recovery, and now he’s fully healed.
