Catholic Charities, Omaha -- Sometimes, it takes detective work to solve a person’s problems. To an outsider, it looked like Lynn just loved to party, and she hung around with people who felt the same way. To be sure, she abused drugs. But a counselor dug a little deeper and found out that Lynn had a medical problem that affected her brain; she suffered from clinical depression, and thought about suicide. Lynn agreed to treatment, and after awhile, she recognized that her substance abuse only made her problems worse. Her counselor helped her get treatment for the physical problem and her depression. Then, Lynn stepped away from her old friends and created a more positive support system. 12-step meetings and a sponsor help her stay away from drugs, and now she has a job. For the first time in a long time, Lynn has something to look forward to: a happier, healthier tomorrow.
