The United Way of the Midlands Board of Directors has appointed Karen Bricklemyer the new President and Chief Executive Officer.

Bricklemyer was selected through a national search. She has worked in the United Way system for 13 years, most recently serving as President and CEO of United Way of North Central Florida in Gainesville. Among her achievements there, Bricklemyer developed and implemented a network of research-based programs that targeted the barriers to school readiness through home visitation and teaching, parenting support, a mobile health van and food drives for children. She directed a grant from the Buffett Early Childhood Fund that energized Gainesville’s business sector in the advocacy of "early learning" opportunities for young children. Bricklemyer was appointed regional lead in Florida’s children’s initiative, and she chaired two county-wide efforts focused on children’s issues and poverty reduction. Campaign revenue increased 32% over five years under her direction.

Karen was previously Senior Vice President & Chief Development Officer for the United Way of Greater Portland, Maine where she was responsible for Major Gifts-Planned Gifts and implementing a customer relationship model business strategy. Karen served in the marketing departments of United Parcel Service and the March of Dimes both in Honolulu, Hawaii and AvMed Health Plans, Florida’s only not for profit HMO, in Gainesville, where she was involved in the implementation of the "Healthy Kids" program.

CEO Search Committee Chair Terry Kroeger calls Bricklemyer an innovative leader who understands the need for United Way to be a catalyst for community changes. "Karen has strong experience in children’s issues and education, two things that are a priority here in the midlands. She is a proven fundraiser and knows how to build strong coalitions that help people become independent and productive members of our neighborhoods. Her skills and leadership will have a measurable impact on the quality of life for all who live here." Kroeger is president and publisher of the Omaha World-Herald; he will become UWM Board Chair in late March.

Bricklemyer's first formal role was to address the 425 guests at United Way’s annual meeting and awards luncheon on March 31.  She plans to spend the next several months meeting  key donors and volunteers, community leaders and executive teams at United Way's partner agencies.

United Way of the Midlands, its donors and volunteers advance the common good of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area by providing our neighbors life-changing opportunities in education, financial stability and health. UWM celebrates 88 years of service in 2011.

People in the metropolitan area received services through United Way Community Care Fund programs 592,203 times in 2010.
