The governing boards of our local nonprofit organizations strive to reflect the diversity of our community. Heartland Blueprint training helps prepare people to serve at the policy-making level of local nonprofits.

In 1988, United Way of America determined the inclusiveness of ethnic minority leaders and policy makers to be essential to the operations of United Way and other helping agencies.  The local initiative of Project Blueprint is Heartland Blueprint, which had its inception in December of 1992.

Purpose
Heartland Blueprint is a volunteer leadership development program for people from all ethnic and racial backgrounds. It is targeted at increasing minority participation on not-for-profit boards and/or committees. Blueprint's focus is to strengthen the boards of not-for-profits within the United Way of the Midlands' service area through a greater involvement of African American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino and Asian/Pacific Islanders. The program is administered by the United Way of the Midlands Volunteer Resource Center; it is free of charge, but a limited number of applicants are accepted each year.

More than 400 people have graduated from the program in the past 18 years.  The 2012 class begins in February.

The training involves a series of workshops over a three-month period that starts in February of each year and concludes with a graduation in May.

** Applications will be accepted through December 31st for next year's class.  **
