| Preparing the Elderly and Others for the Digital TV Conversion |
|
The final switch to an "all-digital" television signal on June 12 may leave many elderly and low-income citizens with blank tv screens in their homes. Here's what we all need to know:
The Federal Government is offering U.S. households up to two $40 coupons to help with the cost of certified tv converter boxes. (A converter box is a one-time purchase that will allow your analog TV to work after the conversion date; an older tv needs this box to continue receiving television broadcasts. You will also need a UHF antenna, or a combination VHF-UHF antenna.) TV converter boxes are expected to cost between $40 and $70. The coupons are free, but supply is limited. (In fact, the coupon program was closed down early in 2009 due to overwhelming demand.) When the coupons are available, they will be mailed to you by the Federal Government.
***If you have trouble installing your converter box, Dial 2-1-1 (or 402-444-6666), and you'll be referred to help in your community.
NEBRASKA TV STATIONS THAT HAVE NOT ALREADY MADE THE SWITCH WILL TEST THEIR DIGITAL SIGNALS ON THIS DATE: May 21, 2009 If you lose your television signal on these dates, it means you need to buy and install a certified converter box before (June 12, 2009).
