Preparing the Elderly and Others for the Digital TV Conversion

The final switch to an "all-digital" television signal on June 12 may leave many elderly and low-income citizens with blank tv screens in their homes.  Here's what we all need to know:

After (June 12, 2009) all full-power television stations will broadcast only in a 'digital' signal. If you use "rabbit ears" or a rooftop antenna with your older analog television, you must take action to continue receiving television broadcasts.   (Televisions connected to cable tv or satellite service should be fine.)

The Federal Government is offering U.S. households up to two $40 coupons to help with the cost of certified tv converter boxes.   (A converter box is a one-time purchase that will allow your analog TV to work after the conversion date; an older tv needs this box to continue receiving television broadcasts. You will also need a UHF antenna, or a combination VHF-UHF antenna.)

TV converter boxes are expected to cost between $40 and $70.  The coupons are free, but supply is limited. (In fact, the coupon program was closed down early in 2009 due to overwhelming demand.)

When the coupons are available, they will be mailed to you by the Federal Government.
You can apply for your converter box coupons in these ways:
Online Form: www.DTV2009.gov
Phone: 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009)
Mail: PO Box 2000, Portland, OR 97208
Fax: 1-877-DTV-4ME2 (1-877-388-4632)
Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing Callers: 1-877-530-2634 (TTY)

With your coupon(s) you will also receive:
• Instructions for using a coupon
• List of coupon-eligible certified tv converter boxes
• List of retailers where you can use the coupon to buy a certified tv converter box
• Frequently asked questions about using the coupon

Coupons expire after 90 days and cannot be reissued so review your information packet as soon as you receive it.
Your coupon will look and work like a plastic gift card. Coupons can be used at participating retailers listed in the information packet that comes with the coupons.

***If you have trouble installing your converter box, Dial 2-1-1  (or 402-444-6666), and you'll be referred to help in your community.

*In Omaha and Lincoln, there are volunteer organizations being trained to help elderly and low-income citizens who need technical assistance. Organizations interested in getting involved in this community service can call United Way of the Midlands at 402-522-7930.

NEBRASKA TV STATIONS THAT HAVE NOT ALREADY MADE THE SWITCH WILL TEST THEIR DIGITAL SIGNALS ON THIS DATE:
May 21, 2009

If you lose your television signal on these dates, it means you need to buy and install a certified converter box before (June 12, 2009).
