(from 2008 UWM Board Chair Steve Martin, and United Way's CEO Michael McLarney) COMMON GOALS - COMMON GOOD We often hear how important it is for families to gather for the evening meal. That time together is the key to discovering problems and finding solutions; it keeps the family strong. United Way sets the table for our community’s human services. It’s where more than three dozen nonprofit partners meet to provide a resilient network of caring programs. It’s where we put the expertise of the private sector and government to work, too. Take financial stability, for instance – a timely topic to be sure. United Way of the Midlands keeps the Community Care network strong, and engages new partners in targeted projects. Between the two approaches, our neighbors have access to things such as foreclosure prevention help, free tax preparation, and convenient financial fitness classes. The same is true in the areas of education and health. Now, with partners that include the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, we embark upon a project with national implications that aims to: United Way’s community impact menu offers life-changing opportunities to those who yearn for a better life – not just in one neighborhood, for one age group or one specific need. United Way works to nourish the entire community – and that benefits all of us. And where is the credit due? We thank the approximately 80,000 generous donors, the committed volunteers who breathe life into the services, and the advocates who pursue our community’s common goals. That’s how we put the words "LIVE UNITED" into action.
